Hyundai, founded in 1947 and Hyundai Motor Company established in 1967 operates the World's largest integrated automobile manufacturing facility, with over 75,000 employees worldwide, capable of producing 1.6 million units each year.
Hyundai ranked 4th largest automaker as of 2009 and has been the world's fastest growing automaker in 2010 & 2011.
Hyundai sold over 3.6 million vehicles worldwide in 2010.
Hyundai's first car was in cooperation with Ford in 1967. It was the Cortina.
Hyundai hired George Turnbull, (actually, my old next door neighbor, when I lived in Balsall Common, England) who was then the Managing Director of Austin Morris at British Leyland. He took the Morris Marina platform, had ItalDesign style the vehicle and used Mitsubishi powertrain technology. In 1975 this car became the first Korean car and was called the Hyundai Pony. George Turnbull was later knighted to become Sir George Turnbull.
Hyundai sold it's first model in the USA in 1986 - the Hyundai Excel and set a record of selling the most automobiles of any other car brand in it's first year of business. Total sales in 1986 were 168,882. These initial cars suffered from poor quality and their reputation tarnished the brand. In response, Hyundai invested heavily in quality, design, manufacturing and long term research of it's vehicles.
Satisfied with the necessary changes, Hyundai released the industry leading 10/100 warranty known as the Hyundai challenge. 10 years or 100,000 miles powertrain warranty
In 1991, Hyundai developed it's first proprietary gasoline engine, the 4 cyl Alpha and transmission
2004 saw Hyundai ranked second in "initial quality" by J.D Power & Associates and is now one of the top 100 most valuable brands worldwide. in recent years Hyundai has received many awards J.D Power & Associates, Consumer reports,Wards, IIHS & EPA including Quality, Top Picks, Car of the Year, Best Engine, Top Safety, Best Reliability, Least expensive to insure, 2nd most fuel efficient automaker behind Honda and many more.
